Visions of struggling in a force 9 gale on your own while being pounded by the wind and rain is an all too familiar scenario for some. All this as the family cower in the back of your car miserable and fed up with the outdoor experience before it's even begun.

Although this may have happened to some people in the past, they are I believe most certainly in the minority.

The vast majority though find camping a very pleasant and rewarding experience. Getting the tent identified is in itself is a great feeling as it immediately dispels those nightmare visions of sleeping in the car with the wife, kids and family dog.

On the contrary for me it means that pretty much, from then on it's all going to be a pleasurable experience. Not that pitching a tent needs to be a dreaded task, especially if the tent happens to be as well made and thought out.

Some ideas are simple but effective, like sewing the instructions on the inside of the carry bag so you do not lose them. You want to get the tent up as quickly as possible so having color coded poles and pole sleeves makes life a lot less complicated. Ideally it's always good to have someone help you assemble the tent, but you can do this on your own. Just as well as a spare set of hands are not always available. Once up and in position it does not take long to get the tent staked to the ground though preventing the wind from blowing it away.

Some tents have a hinged door. It means you do not have to keep zipping the door open and closed. Great to have especially with children who are constantly in and out of the tent. There is an optional rainfly cover that you can assemble if the weather dictates it. Hopefully you will not need that, but if it is required it creates a small porch area where you can position a couple of chairs. Job done in about half an hour.

Not as scary as you would imagine, tent design has come on a lot over the years. Once the tent is up and equipped you can then start to enjoy the camping experience with your family and friends. After all that is what it is all about, breathe in that fresh air and relax.
